Why have a Hiking Staff?
It will help you...
-Cross creeks, streams and rivers
-Measure the depth of water before crossing
-Traversing hillsides
-Carry heavy loads
-Rest En Route
-Cross downed trees over trails
-Break or prevent a fall
-Reduce stress on back, knees, legs, and feet (up to 25%)
-Provide extra power & balance going uphill
-Reduce shock on knees going downhill
-Take pressure off back & hips (mainly uphill)
There are other uses as well, like...
-Center or side pole for a tarp
-Proping up your pack
-Lean on when resting
-Pushing aside spider webs & brush
-Self defense ?
They can be fancy or homemade.
I would strongly suggest homemade. My son and I had a blast making ours. All we did was find some relatively straight sticks from a recent hike and googled online for ideas. After sanding, varnishing and customizing, we made what we feel are perfect for our treks.
Check out the Pope's Cub Scout Corner to see where we got our ideas...
Whatever you decide to do, have fun doing it!
...yours in Scouting! LE
